METAL ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING ENABLES A NEW TITANIUM NAUTICAL STEP DEVELOPED BY MADIT

09 February, 2026MADIT has applied metal additive manufacturing technologies to the development of Soft Step, a mast step made of titanium for the company ONE PALMA, demonstrating the potential of 3D printing in highly technical naval applications. The component has been recognised at the METSTRADE international trade fair with one of the DAME Awards, which distinguish solutions with significant technological contributions to the maritime sector.

In this project, MADIT was responsible for the design, engineering and structural simulation of the part, tackling a complex challenge from a mechanical and functional point of view. The use of additive manufacturing has made it possible to optimise the geometry of the step, reducing weight and material without compromising strength or safety, a balance that is difficult to achieve using conventional processes.

The component is made of Ti6Al4V titanium alloy, a material that offers a high strength-to-weight ratio and adequate corrosion resistance in marine environments. The design freedom inherent in metal 3D printing has facilitated the integration of functional solutions such as a more comfortable tread surface, a magnetic closure system and a certified load attachment point.

The development was carried out in collaboration with ONE PALMA, a company specialising in nautical services and composite solutions, and reflects how metal additive manufacturing expands the possibilities of design and engineering in the naval sector.
