ALTAIR INSPIRE, A SIMULATION SOFTWARE IN ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING

13 February, 2019

HOW DO THE SIMULATION SYSTEMS WORK IN THE ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING?

The simulation applications will accompany us in the design of better products, more optimized and better quality from the start. Through topological optimization tools, we will generate designs that adapt not only to structural requirements, but also to manufacturing requirements. Once the conceptual design has been defined, we can begin in a very simple way to define the additive manufacturing process, starting with the selection of the machine that we will use; this will allow us to define the maximum printing volume. These types of simulation systems, such as Altair Inspire, include tools that allow us to evaluate in real time the amount of additional supports that we will need as we change the orientation of the piece; In this way we will be able to balance the material cost, the printing time, the post-processing needs and the quality of the printed piece in a few seconds. Once the orientation is defined, we can determine the type of support to be used if more rigidity is necessary to avoid excessive deformations of the piece or a higher thermal conductivity index to dissipate heat from very massive areas of our geometry. At this point, the design of the process is finished, and it only remains to verify - through the simulation - the functioning of it. The simulation will show us, in a graphic way, the effectiveness of the orientation and the supports, the effectiveness of the same to evacuate the heat and to avoid deformation in the component and the appearance of possible residual tensions that could affect or damage the piece.
