29 July, 2025Phillips Corporation and Meltio have achieved a significant milestone in advanced manufacturing for defense: the successful integration of the Meltio Engine Blue laser metal deposition system into a Haas TM-1r CNC machine. This marks the first time globally that this hybrid 3D printing and machining solution has been embedded into a CNC platform, signaling a major development in the convergence of additive and subtractive manufacturing.
The Meltio Engine Blue utilizes laser-wire metal 3D printing technology based on welding wire, known for being safe, clean, and cost-effective. Its integration with CNC machinery allows manufacturers to produce complex metal parts with enhanced precision, reduced lead times, and less material waste—key factors in deployment and sustainment scenarios.
Phillips Corporation, a longstanding technology partner to U.S. defense and government sectors, has spearheaded this implementation, further strengthening its strategic collaboration with Meltio. The hybrid system was first demonstrated at the RAPID + TCT trade show in Detroit in April 2025, showcasing its potential to optimize industrial and defense manufacturing workflows.
This achievement follows previous successful collaborations between the two companies, including the deployment of Meltio’s technology on a U.S. Navy ship for onboard metal part production and its adoption by the U.S. Department of Defense to enhance supply chain resilience.
The hybrid solution developed by Meltio and Phillips is designed to improve responsiveness, efficiency, and flexibility in the production of critical components, aligned with the evolving operational demands of the defense sector.
